It’s been a very busy few months and we must apologise to members and readers for being a bit behind in our website updates.
Firstly, the rescue of 15 horses from Prenti Downs Station in the Lake Carnegie area of WA, that occurred in November 2009, was very successful and also resulted in another wave of media attention. Sometimes this is a good thing and great for the charity, sometimes the facts get misconstrued. We do the very best we can to double check all the outward bound stories but sometimes it is a publication’s policy not to allow final edits of media content by the interviewees and that becomes a problem if the reporter has not go his or her facts straight. Anyhow we do the best we can and it’s usually all positive!

Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun with horses? 
The OHHAWA has had it’s 2009 AGM now, plus a Special Meeting to amend and update our Constitution, plus a General Committee meeting. All held at Sheila Greenwell’s property in Margaret River. With around 100 members plus new Committee members Robyn, Kylie, Sandy, Elizabeth and Wendy our former VP, we are looking proactively towards the future. Ian Lockyer has stepped down as President and long standing OHHAWA member Elizabeth Denniss has stepped in to the breach. We thank Ian fondly for his contributions and wish Elizabeth all the best!

Among the many things discussed at the meetings, Sheila recently went on a self-funded trip up north and confirmed several locations with heritage brumbies which – although still to be researched – may need OHHAWA help in future. A place known as Lake Wells, plus an area off the Gunbarrel Highway both appear to contain a number of possibly at risk old bloodline horses. Read more…

Moonlight (Earaheedy Lorna x Redgum Malachi) is almost 5.5 months old now. She was weaned early because she’s so big and her Mum, Lorna, had lost a serious amount of weight (even though she was being hard fed) from the late season, poor pasture and (mainly!) putting everything into her mega foal. Just a quick note to let all of Sophie’s fans know how this amazing young mare is doing. Rescued as a young foal with her half sister Lilly in 2005, these two orphans nearly died but were saved by Sheila and Ross Quartermaine. Four years on, both mares have knee problems from being physically compromised (drought and starvation) so early in life, but these days both are doing just fine. Read more…

Gosh…seems like months since I’ve uploaded anything and actually it has been. Our home internet has been down for six weeks but fortunately is now repaired.
What’s happening on the farm? Well, break of season finally came, late but welcome. Because it’s been late rains this year we have poor pasture and have had to buy in more hay. Not good. (Everyone’s finances are bad enough at the moment!)
Over the entire month of June however, we had only 3 fine days. The rest was rain, rain, rain, although we are still 300ml down on last year. The initial rains were torrential and washed away a lot of topsoil. Not good either. Read more…

Well, we got our first mini break away from the farm for four days, recently. We went to Denmark (down near Albany), and had a lovely time. On the way home we arranged to go and see Mt Weld Elora, who was rescued from the station of the same name near the Goldfields, along with a number of others, by Rob Forster and friends (with help from Barrick Gold Mining), in 2006. Don’t look if you are squeamish, but I think it’s worth writing about. As some of you will know, our biggest grey mare, Earaheedy Margaret, who is over 16hh and was rescued in 2005 by Sheila Greenwell, has a bad hind leg injury as a result of kicking through fences 3 times over a 2 year period. Each time she kicked (at a horse through) a fence, she did it with the same leg and got caught in the same spot, resulting in layers of flesh being taken off each time. Read more…

Never a dull moment in the country! We’ve got the vet coming today because two of our more dominant mares (Betsy and Lorna to be exact), decided to have a fight to establish who was boss and before we got there Betsy suffered a nasty bite which will need stitches. Read more…
