She was weaned early because she’s so big and her Mum, Lorna, had lost a serious amount of weight (even though she was being hard fed) from the late season, poor pasture and (mainly!) putting everything into her mega foal. Earaheedy Sophie ~ Update

July 1st, 2009

Just a quick note to let all of Sophie’s fans know how this amazing young mare is doing. Rescued as a young foal with her half sister Lilly in 2005, these two orphans nearly died but were saved by Sheila and Ross Quartermaine. Four years on, both mares have knee problems from being physically compromised (drought and starvation) so early in life, but these days both are doing just fine. Read more…

July Update – Winter & Weaning!

Gosh…seems like months since I’ve uploaded anything and actually it has been. Our home internet has been down for six weeks but fortunately is now repaired.

What’s happening on the farm? Well, break of season finally came, late but welcome. Because it’s been late rains this year we have poor pasture and have had to buy in more hay. Not good. (Everyone’s finances are bad enough at the moment!)

Over the entire month of June however, we had only 3 fine days. The rest was rain, rain, rain, although we are still 300ml down on last year. The initial rains were torrential and washed away a lot of topsoil. Not good either. Read more…
