Elora – Then & Now
Well, we got our first mini break away from the farm for four days, recently. We went to Denmark (down near Albany), and had a lovely time. On the way home we arranged to go and see Mt Weld Elora, who was rescued from the station of the same name near the Goldfields, along with a number of others, by Rob Forster and friends (with help from Barrick Gold Mining), in 2006.
To say we were gobsmacked when we saw her is an understatement. Rescued as an emaciated, smallish 10 month old filly, Elora is now 3.5 years old and has positively bloomed with her chosen humans. She lives with an old stockhorse mare and a pony who bosses the now nearly 15hh, solid, beautiful, true black Elora around.
A smaller line in the wild, it looks as if the Mt Welds were perhaps a little environmentally stunted, because with good food and care, Elora (named after a road on the station), has grown in to a proper horse and looks a totally different beast to even 12 months ago, when she was sold.
It was fabulous to see her and we are really grateful to Jo for giving her such a great home and start to life. Elora will shortly go under saddle and be an active bush hack for her family. At present she loves racing about the huge paddocks with her old stockhorse friend, chasing cattle, playing with the family’s children, following the hens and just generally sticking her nose in to every new piece of business! She has a huge personality and we can see this heritage brumby will go a long way.

Elora when first rescued – a skinny little 10 month wild filly, bitten, kicked and friendless. (For her full story, look under “horse news” on the website.)

I take my hat off to those that can effect such a change in a horse, amazing what good handling, good food and a touch of tlc will do.
