February 2010 Update : Horse Stories…

February 28th, 2010
It’s been a very busy few months and we must apologise to members and readers for being a bit behind in our website updates.
Firstly, the rescue of 15 horses from Prenti Downs Station in the Lake Carnegie area of WA, that occurred in November 2009, was very successful and also resulted in another wave of media attention. Sometimes this is a good thing and great for the charity, sometimes the facts get misconstrued. We do the very best we can to double check all the outward bound stories but sometimes it is a publication’s policy not to allow final edits of media content by the interviewees and that becomes a problem if the reporter has not go his or her facts straight. Anyhow we do the best we can and it’s usually all positive!

The 15 Prenti horses have now largely been rehabilitated, trained and sold on to good homes. Actually we should say the 14 Prenti horses and the one Mule mare who was also rescued with the group, unbeknownst to the rescuers at the time! The 16hh, 7 year old pangare coloured female mule, “Malanga”, has been much discussed. Her training is going well and we think she’ll make someone a fine mount. She is very fast, strong and intelligent. While there was initially some doubt as to whether or not she was a mule, it appears she is.
The few remaining Prentis just have a few more weeks left of training and putting on weight and they will be off to those wonderful members and people we have matched the horses up with and who are eagerly awaiting their arrivals.
Secondly, Earaheedy Lorna’s yearling filly Moonlight has officially been accepted by the WA Mounted Police (WAMP), following her donation to WAMP by Kevin & Katherine Waddington, who bred the filly. WAMP are very pleased with the sturdy big Waler and there will be an official handover at the Maylands Barracks on Wednesday 10th March. The Waddingtons hope that the donation of the filly and her potential future career in the Police Force will help highlight the work done by the OHHAWA and also highlight the value of these great natured, highly trainable horses.
Aside from this the OHHAWA have announced the inaugural Equine Art Exhibition that will be held in Bridgetown, south west WA, in October 2010. More details soon but this exhibition will hopefully become an annual highlight and has been timed to coincide with a number of other big events in the south west, in order to attract more visitors. Several well known artists (all mediums) have already committed to exhibiting work at the event and there will be a big Opening Night dinner with a Middle Eastern theme (to honour the heritage horses and their riders who were sent to this area in WWI, etc)…with some fabulous entertainment!
